GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION

There are many important considerations for a therapist when working with an African American client. The notion of “homeplace” is discussed in this course and how it pertains to a feeling of ownership and empowerment. To develop cultural competency requires that a therapist be aware of racial discrimination and cultural issues that might affect the way a client reacts and responds to therapy. By better understanding common themes, differences and cultural relationships, a therapist can better understand their client.

This course is comprised of three articles.  The first article addresses the importance of understanding the context of the idea of a homeplace in the African American culture; the second provides a review of specific guidelines to consider when working with African American clients. The third article discusses ways to build rapport with African American clients by gaining an understanding for the culture.

Educational Objectives:

This course will teach psychotherapists to
  • Summarize the concept of “homeplace” in context with the examples provided.
  • Explain how African American history, culture and spirituality may influence client presentation.
  • Apply basic guidelines for maintaining cultural competency when working with clients of African American descent.

Course Syllabus:

  • An overview of the concept of “homeplace” in African American culture.
  • A literature review of how to provide culturally competent therapy to African Americans with specific guidelines for therapists.
  • An overview of building rapport with African American clients.
