GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION This is an intermediate level course about spousal and partner abuse. The course is based on the second edition of the classic book, The Battered Woman Syndrome, by Lenore Walker, Ed.D., published by Springer, (2000). Dr. Walker, without any doubt, has been the most prominent scholar, researcher, and advocate on the issues of domestic violence. This book was published 15 years after the publication of her groundbreaking book by the same title. The book discussed the complexities, detection, assessment, and intervention relating to battering relationships. It also covers the issues of cultural, same sex and community resources. It is based on Dr. Walker's research and theory and includes a comprehensive review of the literature on the topic. Walker's most important contributions have been identifying the phases in the cycle of violence and illuminating the societal factors that make abuse so prevalent in our culture. For a detailed list of the areas covered in this course, see the book's Table of Contents and Addendum. Educational Objectives The overall goal of this course is to help psychotherapists understand the complexities involved in domestic violence and enable them to make predictions, assessments, and interventions in these volatile and often tragic situations. It also sheds light on the many myths and misperceptions that are prevalent in this field.
